Wild Rose Cocktail

Description

Wild Rose CocktailThe Wild Rose is one of the 3:1:1 family of cocktails, which are like Martinis but they use equal parts Dry Vermouth and Sweet Vermouth.  These cocktails are very different from their half-siblings the Martinis, because of the entirely different character added by the Sweet Vermouth.

I made this with the hitherto difficult Cold River Gin, and it was ideal. The unfamiliar cardamom and other spicy notes that you find in the Cold River (or Ingenium Gin and Nashoba Perfect 10) need that Sweet Vermouth to bring them back into balance in a way that Dry Vermouth alone cannot do.

Ingredients
2 oz Gin (a spicy American gin)
1 T Dry Vermouth
1 T Sweet Vermouth
1 ds Angostura Bitters
1 ds Orange Bitters
Instructions
Shake all ingredients with ice and serve in a chilled cocktail glass. No garnish.
Notes
Really, this does best with one of the more assertive, less juniper-forward new American craft gins.
