A Traditional Gin SlingA venerable classic worth knowing in trying times, such as when the restaurant bar has no Vermouth, no bitters, and no mixers of any kind!

(This happened to me just this past Friday. I won't say where, as I expect the proprietor is remedying that deplorable situation.)

In a short glass, muddle the sugar into the gin. A drop of water might help get it started. Fill the glass with ice. Sprinkle a dash of nutmeg on top and serve.
This can be made in almost any restaurant that has gin. Sugar is on every table, and ice in your water glass. All that remains is a dash of nutmeg from the kitchen, perhaps on your bread plate. Of course you must be pleasant to your server!
