Irish Whole Wheat Soda Bread

Description

Irish Whole Wheat Soda BreadThis is great sliced thin and served with almost any kind of cheese, especially farmhouse cheese and local ale!

I made this one with King Arthur Irish-style flour and NH buttermilk, but the supermarket stuff makes good bread too - this is an excellent recipe.

Preparation time
45 minutes
Ingredients
3 c Whole Wheat Flour (I use King Arthur Irish flour)
1 c white flour
1 1⁄2 c Buttermilk (I got it from Brookford Farm, NH)
1 T kosher salt
1 t Baking Soda
3⁄4 t Baking Powder
Instructions
  1. Preheat oven to 375. Combine dry ingredients.
  2. Add buttermilk as needed to make a smooth dough. Work smooth, but do not overhandle.
  3. Form into a round loaf and cut a cross in the top. Brush with more buttermilk if you like.
  4. Bake on a greased sheet for 35 minutes, or until done. Let cool before serving.
