Name: Kretchma Cocktail
Source: Old Mr. Boston
Ingredients: Vodka, Creme de Cacao, lemon juice, grenadine
Look at the ingredients and try to taste on your mind's tongue how these go together. The mostly-flavorless vodka gets a pass. But Creme de Cacao and lemon juice? And how does Grenadine fit in?
Look online and you'll find numerous recipes, all the same, and none of them has word one about its origins or lore. That can only mean one thing - they all came from the venerable Old Mr Boston cocktail recipe book. That's the recipe I used, to the letter. I used Berkshire Mountain Distilling's Ice Glen Vodka and non-entity creme de cacao, and lemon juice. The dash of grenadine came from my personal jar of homemade Grenadine syrup courtesy of the excellent Jeffrey Morgenthaler recipe.
I have to say it works, but it works more in contrast than in harmony. That's OK - not everyone is Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young. Abbott and Costello worked in their own way. And I think that way is more the Creme-de Cacao and lemon juice way.
Try it - it's really pretty tasty, and a great example of a small cocktail from before the days of the one-quart Margarita.
Note: The Czech word for tavern is Krčmě, so I think that's the source of the name, if not the cocktail. More research pending!
