French 75

By John, 4 July, 2013
Description

French 75If you should find yourself in the deplorable situation of having leftover champagne and no more lobster and caviar, then you might make the best of a bad situation by mixing up a French 75, named for a WWI artillery piece.

I guess the name comes from the surprising kick you get from a glass of champagne with 2 oz of gin in it. In my opinion, if you put 2 oz gin in a glass of champagne you should jolly well expect a kick!

Yield
1 Servings
Preparation time
5 minutes
Ingredients
1⁄2 Lemon
2 t Sugar
2 oz Gin
2 oz Champagne
Instructions
Squeeze the half lemon into a champagne flute. Add the sugar and stir until mixed. Shake the gin with some ice to chill, and add the lemon and sugar. Top up with champagne. Garnish with a cherry and an orange slice.
Notes
Sarah Leah Chase makes hers with Cognac in Cold Weather Cooking, but I must say that if I have 2oz of good Cognac looking for a way to my belly, it will find its way unaccompanied... To be honest, Mrs Pilgrim and my humble self tried both on (early) New Year's Day 2018, and we both declared the gin version superior, depending on the gin!
