For Monday's dinner, my wife got an enormous piece of very fresh haddock from our favorite local fishmonger, Wood's Seafood. It seemed to me the obvious choice was the Berkshire Brewing Company's Steel Rail Extra pale Ale from South Deerfield, MA. This was supplemented by some sting beans (of the French Velour variety) from the Brimfield Farmers Market.
The combination was indeed excellent, the distinct haddock flavor pairing particularly well with a balanced, hoppy pale ale. IMO an IPA would have beaten up the fish flavor, but a pale ale is a perfect accompaniment to a broiled haddock simply prepared in all its ephemeral fresh glory.
I often have some Wazoo Juice from Dr Gonzo's Uncommon Condiments with haddock, but in this case the pale ale was all the complement I could have asked for.
The Steel Rail is my favorite everyday pale ale. You can find reviews of it at Beer Advocate.
