We visited Element Brewing in Millers Falls as part of our expedition observing the Microbrewers of the Pioneer Valley, I got a bottle of their Red Giant, which the fellow at the brewery was kind enough to answer all my questions about. Element ales are not session brews. They require documentation, and time for reflection - just my kind of beer!
This particular ale has a strong hop profile and rich malts, and the flavor varies with temperature. I had it in a snifter at a little cooler than cellar temperature and let it warm through the evening. It's a big bottle of rich ale; it lasted all night.
To eat, I had a stinky French Epoisses and some blackberries. That was enough. I cooked up some shrimp and a lobster tail for Lorna, but neither of them could fit in the room with the Red Giant.
I finally thought of it like this: This Red Giant is like the smoldering coals of a campfire late at night... ever-changing, constantly fascinating.
