I found Ryan & Wood's Knockabout Gin at a liquor store near where I work in Lexington - that was convenient!
This is a spicy sort of gin more than a floral or piney one. It includes the usual botanicals: juniper, angelica, orris root, etc, but it also includes cinnamon and nutmeg. These don't lend as much warmth as the cardamom does to Cold River Gin, but they also didn't make it a happy fit with most Martinis.
I tried it 4:1 with Dolin, Vya, and Martini & Rossi. The last fared best, but none of them were excellent Martinis for me; your mileage may vary.
I thought it was very good in an Aviation and pretty good in a Monkey Gland, both of which I expected to play better with the spiciness. I would continue my researches along those lines. I also plan to try it in some of the 3:1:1 family of cocktails, where I expect the sweet vermouth will complement the spicy notes.
I have not yet tried it in a Gin & Tonic.
